How to Prepare Your Cat for Surgery

Cat Surgery

Preparing your cat for surgery can seem scary. Yet, knowing what to expect can help. At The Cat Practice in Oak Park and Berwyn, IL, we specialize in cats, so you can rest assured your favorite feline gets the best care possible.

A Week or More Before Surgery

If you have surgery for your cat scheduled in advance, there are a few things you'll need to do ahead of time. First, ensuring your cat is up to date on all vaccinations is essential.

These may be required at the vet's office or hospital. Since your cat will be around other cats, you'll want to be sure they are protected from potentially preventable diseases.

Our veterinarian will administer vaccinations at least five days before surgery. This period gives the vaccines time to work before your cat is exposed to other cats.

It's also great to speak with your vet about preparing your cat for surgery. Learn all you can about the reason for feline surgery. For example, mast cell tumors and spay or neuter procedures are common issues requiring surgery.

The Day Before Surgery

If your cat takes any medications, you'll need to see if you should administer them the day before surgery. You must stop certain medications until after the procedure, but our veterinarian will administer others safely for your pet.

It's a great time to groom your cat. Yet, you won't be able to bathe your furry friend for a while after surgery to let the incision heal. Therefore, ensuring the proper care of your pet before the procedure is best.

It would help if you also avoided rough play the day before surgery. Rough play can increase the soreness your kitty experiences after the procedure. Spend some time bonding with them. A quiet evening together is great pre-surgery prep.

Hours Before Surgery

You'll probably need to remove your cat's access to food and water hours before surgery. This fasting prevents them from aspirating while under anesthesia.
