Importance of Vaccinating Your Pets

Vaccinating Your Pets

Recommended and required vaccines are vital to your cat's health. At The Cat Practice, we keep track of your pet's vaccination schedule and are available to answer your questions and advise you if any additional vaccines are necessary.

Cat Vaccines

Kittens and older cats need the same preventive shots. Vaccines for kittens begin at six weeks with the feline distemper, the feline herpes virus, and the calicivirus. These are often given in one shot at six weeks and then repeated every three to four weeks until they reach 16 weeks old. Twelve months after the first dose, your cat will get a one-year booster. For new adult cats, these are given in two doses, 3-4 weeks apart. Both need an additional booster every three years.

At eight weeks, kittens are old enough for the rabies vaccine. Three to four weeks later, they need a second shot. These only have an effective life of 12 months. Many county and state health departments require all cats and dogs eight weeks and older have an annual rabies vaccination.
